Ventosa, also known as cupping therapy, is a traditional healing practice that has been utilized for centuries across various cultures. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, which is believed to facilitate healing by mobilizing blood flow, relieving muscle tension, improving circulation, and promoting cell repair. The cups used can be made from various materials, including glass, bamboo, earthenware, or silicone.

Different techniques are used to create the suction. For example, in fire cupping, a flame is used to heat the air inside the cup before placing it on the skin, creating a vacuum as it cools. Alternatively, a mechanical pump can be used to remove the air. This practice, whether called dry cupping when only suction is applied or wet cupping when it involves controlled medicinal bleeding, aims to alleviate physical ailments and promote overall health.

Interestingly, cupping therapy has found a place in the realm of BDSM, where it is used as part of sensory play. Here, the primary objective shifts from healing to pleasure, pain, and the exploration of sensations. The cups create a unique tactile experience, as the suction causes an intense, sometimes pleasurable, sensation. In this context, the practice focuses on the sensory experience and the consensual exchange of power and control, rather than on health benefits.

In the Philippines, ventosa is a popular and widely practiced form of therapy, often performed in homes rather than clinical settings. A distinctive and simpler method is employed: wrapping a coin with paper in a way that creates a wick-like tip, lighting the wick, and then covering it with a glass. The flame consumes the oxygen inside the glass, creating a vacuum that causes the glass to suction onto the skin. This local adaptation is notable for its accessibility and ease of use, requiring minimal equipment and preparation. It reflects the resourcefulness and ingenuity in traditional Filipino healing practices, making cupping therapy more accessible to the general population.

My personal experience with ventosa in the Philippines highlights the simplicity and effectiveness of this method. The process begins with selecting a coin and wrapping it in paper, leaving a small tip protruding like a wick. The coin is then placed on the skin, and the paper wick is lit. Quickly, a glass is placed over the coin, and as the flame consumes the oxygen inside the glass, a vacuum forms, causing the glass to stick to the skin. The sensation is a mix of warmth and pressure as the suction takes effect. The treatment typically lasts for several minutes, and once the glass is removed, there are often circular red marks left behind, indicating the areas where the suction was strongest. These marks can last for a few days, serving as a visible sign of the therapy.

Ventosa or cupping therapy is a versatile practice with applications ranging from traditional healing to modern BDSM play. Its therapeutic use focuses on physical health and well-being, while its application in BDSM centers on sensory exploration and pleasure. The adaptation of ventosa in the Philippines exemplifies how traditional practices can be tailored to local contexts, making healing accessible and practical for everyday use.
